I Am So Close

Without a doubt, my greatest strength is perseverance. The one thing I have learned is if you want anything bad enough, you just do whatever it takes, however long it takes. Obstacles are simply to be skirted around or mowed down. Don't let my appearance fool you. Get in my way and I'll knock you on your ass. You see, being a lawyer who happens to be a woman is an especially tough road to Partnership. I have witnessed female colleagues being passed over to the point where they just give up and settle for the senior associate title, if they even make it that far. But not me. I am going to prove that it can be done, even though I am going through an ulcer-inducing divorce from my soon-to-be-ex who served me papers because of the spiteful bastard that he is. He knew it was my dream to be able to accept a senior associate position at Crane, Poole and Schmidt. To work alongside two legends in the legal world, Denny Crane and Shirley Schmidt (let's not comment on Edwin Poole) is an opportunity of a lifetime! But the truth is he resented my success, his ego was bruised, and he decided I was the reason our marriage was not working. But he is not going to distract me with this stunt. I am going to persevere and get that partnership. I am so close.

As a good basketball player once told me, 'ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in'.

Edwin had ambition to be Perry Mason. Be careful. That's all I'm saying.

Obviously, Edwin had an accident along the way. More like a car wreck.

All the more reason not to follow quite so close.

Tailgating advice from a relatively recent junior partner.

Believe me, I know who to tailgate and who to steer clear of at Crane, Poole & Schmidt.

If you don't mind mixing metaphors, climbing the ladder sometimes means you have to step on a few rungs. Please remember - we're people first.

*eyes narrowing* I think you have the wrong impression of me Brad. I do not step on people, unless they want to be stepped on.

*eyes widen* Want to be -

Are you moonlighting?

*smirking* And let's cut to the "chase", Chase. Look, I am going through a very ugly divorce right now and the timing of it, frankly, stinks. But I broke my butt to get here and I can't let anyone or anything hinder me. I have played by the rules to get here and I will continue to do so. Feel better now?

All right, listen. This is a tough firm for anybody to make it. True, there may be glass ceilings. We've had to let female associates go in the past for due cause - you just try to get though it. As to your personal situation, it's perfectly natural to acknowledge the emotional distress of a divorce. I'm a male and therefore more innately equipped to set aside personal issues.

*He notices, by her expression, he may have crossed a line and clams up*

*Sizing him up* I'll let that one go.

*Friendlier* Since I'm new here, how about we go to the nearest watering hole so you can fill me in on some of the cases the firm is handling?

*relieved* No objection on both counts. Ask anyone here - my decompression chamber is the 21st Amendment over on Beacon Hill. We'll take a cab. Safer.

Great, I'll go get my things. You can also fill me in on the cast of characters here. I have heard quite a bit about a few of them already.

They're all good guys. *Brad shoves his hands in his pockets and crosses his fingers, studying the floor lights above the elevator door*

It'll take more than a few of Pete's Perilous Punch to get me to talk negatively about our colleagues behind their back. How about we talk about you.

*smirking* Interesting you interpreted my comment as though I was looking for dirt. Perhaps I should have used the word "colorful" to clarify the cast of characters. Denny Crane certainly is.

My apologies.

Speaking of Denny being colorful, there are certain... shall we say, wardrobe mandates around here.

*Brad flags down a cab on Tremont and holds the door open for her, then glances back toward the building, wondering if this appeared unprofessional*

*Smiling as she steps into the cab* I find his choice of shirts and ties...inspiring. It takes a man of supreme confidence to pull it off and he does it with great "panache."

You do know there are rules for our female associates as well. Albeit, depending on who's passing judgment on you at any given moment.

*Eyebrows raised* Really? And what is your criteria, Mr. Blackwell?

[info]brad_chase

August 19 2005, 02:43:40 UTC 6 years ago

*confidently, having thought all this through long ago* I encourage all to care for their personal appearance in a professional manner, keeping in mind attire is representative of conduct. *nods, then adds* On company time.

*Saluting Brad* Yes, sir! Whatever you say, sir!

Sorry, I couldn't resist, knowing that you were a Marine, and all.

August 20 2005, 02:54:50 UTC 6 years ago

It may have come across as an imperative, but you asked. I believe in being straightforward.

*Brad softens* That's just my take. I'm not your boss. Denny would likely have you in something from Fredericks of Hollywood.

August 20 2005, 03:19:42 UTC 6 years ago

*Laughing* I'm sure that would go over well with Shirley.

They've got an interesting dynamic. I'll give you some more advice - don't take sides between the two of them. It's a minefield and we've had one casualty. More to come before that chapter is closed.

*Their cab pulls up in front of the neighborhood bar* This places is a lawyer hangout. Hope you don't mind cigar smoke.
